Menopause is defined as the time that occurs 12 months after a woman's final menstrual period. Perimenopause refers to the transitional phase leading up to menopause, during which the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. This transition typically lasts about seven years but can vary significantly in duration and symptom intensity.
